Snuffle mats are made of sturdy rubber matting, with securely double-tied fleece. They measure approximately 50cm x50cm.
First Time Use
The first time you use a snuffle mat, place some treats on the top of the mat (when your dog is hungry) and point to them. You can gradually increase the difficulty over time and hide treats deeper within the mat.
As a Slow-Feeder
You can also place a whole meal of food inside the mat by separating out the fronds of fleece and dropping food morsels in between. This will help to slow down fast-eaters.
When teaching your dog to love their crate, utilise the snuffle mat, but unless you are 100% sure your dog is not going to chew the mat, do not leave them alone. Ideally remove the mat once your pet is done.
Care of the Snuffle Mat
The more the smells build up in the mat, the more fun it becomes. However you will probably still want to machine wash on a gentle cycle. You can place in the dryer on a low setting or simply dry in the sun.
Alternatively, just shake out any debris and pop it outside in direct sunlight on a weekly or monthly basis.
Supervise During Use
Some dogs will chew the rubber or tear the fleece, which can be a problem and even lead to surgery to remove foreign material. Some dogs are not chewers and are safe to be left with a snuffle mat, but always err on the side of caution and supervise during use.
