Unfortunately 85% of pets over 3 years of age have dental disease. Pet owners are usually completely unaware that there is a problem until a veterinarian points it out. The only hint of infection can be the awful 'doggy breath', which is the smell of chronic infection. Dental disease is a gradual and often undiagnosed problem that causes much suffering in pets.
Dental disease rarely stops a pet from eating, despite the damage that is being done to the immune system and organs such as the kidney, heart and liver. Teeth that are covered in solidified pus like the ones pictured above are painful and a source of chronic infection and malaise.
ACT Pet Crisis Support has now arranged a subsidised and discounted dentistry service with the RSPCA at Weston. This arrangement is a way to help meet the needs of the low income, pet-owning community and also veterinarians in the Canberra region. This service is a referral-only service due to the limited capacity of the RSPCA. Pet owners are able to access the service if they are unable to utilise VetPay or save up money to get the procedure done at their regular veterinarian. The RSPCA accepts Centrepay and in certain circumstances ACT Pet Crisis Support can make a contribution to costs.
If your pet needs a dental or you are a veterinarian referring a client who cannot afford dentistry at your clinic, please fill out the following form.
