How Does it Work?
ACT Pet Crisis Support is available to disadvantaged pet owners in the Canberra and local region, including Queanbeyan.
If you are a pet owner and your pet is unwell, the first step is to visit your vet for assessment. In an emergency situation, and if outside of normal business hours, please attend the Animal Referral Hospital in Pialligo, the Canberra Veterinary Emergency Service in Gunghalin or the Walk in Clinic for Animals in Belconnen. Your veterinarian can give first aid, provide an estimate for care and apply to the charity on your behalf for financial assistance. If a pet owner is unable to afford a consultation fee, we have the ability to cover this so that you can get your pet seen by a vet. You will however need to prove that you are experiencing financial hardship (i.e you have a Healthcare card and a VetPay reference number or email showing you have been applied for finance). Whenever a pet owner needs to apply to access the charity, we will first ask them to do a VetPay application (you can do this in advance to speed things up here). You will need to provide a VetPay reference number or email to show that you applied. We do not have the ability to take direct applications. You must first visit a veterinarian for assessment and then the vet clinic can apply on your behalf. If your vet is not aware of us, please direct them to this website and ask them to check the section 'my client needs help'. For veterinarians applying to the fund, the charity assists disadvantaged pet owners who have exhausted all other financial options to cover an unexpected, urgent veterinary bill. Please ensure your client has explored all other options, such as borrowing from friends and family and VetPay before submitting an application. For all requests for help, please wait for approval from the committee. The maximum we can assist with is $1500. Applications are required by filling out the application form under 'My client needs help'. On completion of the invoice, please email it to [email protected] along with your clinic's bank details. We are usually able to approve applications within 1-2 hours. |
Want to Get Involved? Please join us on Facebook or Instagram if you would like to help by sharing our posts and getting support for our campaigns. We can also provide donation boxes if you would like to assist with fundraising at your workplace or business. If you would like to join us, in any capacity, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We are also always on the lookout for foster carers to help pets with medical conditions that need temporary care and for pets who need temporary care while their owner is in hospital. |
Veterinary ClinicsWe welcome supporting veterinary clinics who would like to utilise the fund and promote it when possible.
One of the intended benefits of the fund is to ease the burden on individual clinics and veterinarians who find they frequently encounter people experiencing hardship and either discount their care or recommend euthanasia. If you would like to become a partner vet, please get in touch via email at [email protected] More details on how to determine if your client qualifies for the fund can be found here. |
